Guardian federal Credit Union was founded by a small group of individuals seeking a consumer friendly alternative to banks in August 1956. Our original charter name was the Norfolk Federal Employees Federal Credit Union and we were located in the Norfolk Post Office and Courts Building, which today is known as the Walter E. Hoffman Courthouse. In 1961, Guardian moved into the Portsmouth Federal Building and our name changed to the Fifth Coast Guard District Federal Credit Union. In 1984 we adopted our current name, Guardian Federal Credit Union. Guardian is and always has been a unique financial institution, as we are a not-for-profit financial cooperative, owned and operated by our members. This ensures that our purpose remains constant and our focus remains clear. We exist to serve the financial needs of our members, and to promote your financial well being. Our policy is ‘once a member always a member” which means that even if you retire, move away or change jobs, you can maintain your membership We combine technology with our friendly staff members allowing us to serve you wherever you are, whenever you want. WHO CAN JOIN GUARDIAN FEDERAL CREDIT UNION?
All credit unions have a defined field of membership. You must fall within a credit union's field of membership to be eligible to join. Guardian's field of membership includes the employer groups listed below and the City of Portsmouth, Virginia.
You may be eligible to join Guardian Federal Credit Union if you or an immediate family member or household member are associated with one of the groups below.
USCG active duty, retired, reserve, auxiliary, employees of USCG non-appropriated funds activities, and employees of USCG contractors.
U.S. Civil Service active and retired civil servants.
Navy, Marines, Air Force and Army, active duty, retired, or reserve.
ANY ONE who....Lives, works, worships in or goes to school in Portsmouth, VA.
